Power outages are becoming all too common these days. Increased storms, natural disasters, heat waves, and even attacks on our grid are reasons for these increased blackouts. So, what can you do to be prepared in the event that you lose power?

Solar powered generators are a great solution for providing you and your family with the power you need when the power goes out. Solar power generators are much easier to use than gas-powered generators. A gas generator uses around six gallons of gas for 12 hours of run time. A good emergency backup system can run essential appliances in your home. They can also hold a charge for up to six months without needing to be plugged in.

Tips for using your backup power supply:

  • Make sure you read the users manual for the portable generator and follow the instructions for operating and storing the generator.
  • Limit power usage by only powering the items that are absolutely essential. Remember, you want to have power for the important stuff.
  • Use low wattage LED lights. A seven watt LED has the same brightness as a 40 watt incandescent.
  • Keep your fridge closed! When you open the fridge it lets in warm air. This makes the fridge power on and wastes power. Only open the door when you know what you're taking out and do it quickly.

Not all power stations are created equal.

When it comes to portable power stations and solar generators, there are a lot of options available. So, what should you look for when choosing the right system?

There are a few things you should look for in an emergency power station:

1. Choose a high quality lithium powered system.

  • They are lightweight and portable, allowing you to take the generator with you, if you need to leave home.
  • Lithium batteries can also be run down to 80 percent and it won't damage the battery. Sealed lead acid batteries can only be run down to 50 percent without it effecting the battery life.
  • Lithium batteries can get up to 2000 charge cycles vs. only 500 cycles for a sealed lead acid battery. This means your lithium system will last four times as long.

2. Check battery capacity.

  • Get a generator with at least 3000wh battery. This is enough to run essential items in your home for 2-4 days. If you add solar panels for charging it will provide much longer run times.

3. Check inverter size.

  • You should long for a power station that can run at least 2,000 continuous watts. Most of the popular solar generator only powers 1500 watts. If you're going to run more than one item you'll be glad to have the extra power.
